Dedicated Healthcare Pathway

Summary:

The Alberta Express Entry Dedicated Healthcare Pathway allows qualified healthcare professionals with a job offer in Alberta to apply for provincial nomination through the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program.

This pathway is designed to help Alberta address labour shortages in the healthcare sector by attracting internationally trained professionals who are able to work in regulated healthcare occupations in the province.

Candidates applying through the Express Entry option must already have a valid Express Entry profile and meet the eligibility criteria of one of the federal economic immigration programs. If nominated by Alberta, candidates receive a provincial nomination and can then apply for Canadian permanent residence through the Express Entry system.

The Dedicated Healthcare Pathway under the Alberta Express Entry stream is for healthcare professionals who:

  • Have a valid job offer from an Alberta healthcare employer

  • Meet the licensing or regulatory requirements for their profession in Alberta

  • Have an active Express Entry profile

This pathway is part of the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program and specifically targets regulated healthcare occupations where Alberta faces workforce shortages.

Once approved by the province, candidates receive a provincial nomination, which significantly increases their Express Entry ranking and allows them to apply for permanent residence through the federal government.

There are two versions of the pathway:

  • Express Entry option (for candidates with an Express Entry profile)

  • Non-Express Entry option (for candidates who do not qualify for Express Entry)

This page focuses on the Express Entry option.

Eligible Healthcare Occupations

Applicants must have a job offer in one of the healthcare occupations recognized under this pathway. These professions are regulated in Alberta and require proof that the applicant meets the requirements of the relevant licensing authority.

Eligible healthcare professions include:

  • Physicians

  • Registered Nurses

  • Licensed Practical Nurses

  • Nurse Practitioners

  • Physician Assistants

  • Occupational Therapists

  • Physiotherapists

Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the minimum requirements of the regulatory body responsible for licensing their profession in Alberta before applying.

The employer must have valid Workers’ Compensation Board coverage, and the position must be in one of the eligible healthcare occupations.

2. Proof of Eligibility to Practice

4. Minimum Express Entry Score

Candidates must have a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System score of 300 in the Express Entry system.

5. Federal Program Eligibility

Applicants must meet the requirements of at least one federal immigration program managed through Express Entry:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program

  • Federal Skilled Trades Program

6. Intention to Live in Alberta

Applicants must demonstrate that they intend to live and work permanently in Alberta.

Application Process

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program uses a Worker Expression of Interest system to select candidates for worker streams, including the Dedicated Healthcare Pathway.

Step 1: Submit a Worker Expression of Interest

Candidates must first submit a Worker Expression of Interest through the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program portal.

In the Expression of Interest, applicants provide information about:

  • Work experience

  • Occupation

  • Job offer in Alberta

  • Language ability

  • Express Entry profile

  • Education

The province assigns a score based on a points grid and places the candidate into the Worker Stream pool.

Step 2: Wait for Selection

The Alberta government regularly conducts selection draws from the Worker Expression of Interest pool.

Candidates may be selected based on:

  • Expression of Interest score

  • Provincial labour market priorities

  • Available nomination spaces

  • Demand for specific occupations

Expressions of Interest remain valid for one year.

Step 3: Receive an Invitation to Apply

If selected, the candidate receives an invitation to apply for the Dedicated Healthcare Pathway.

The invitation is sent through the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program portal.

Step 4: Submit the Full Application

Applicants must submit a complete provincial nomination application within the specified deadline.

The application requires:

  • Personal and employment information

  • Job offer documentation

  • Proof of eligibility to practice the healthcare profession in Alberta

  • Express Entry profile details

  • Supporting documents

A non-refundable application fee of 1,500 Canadian dollars applies.

Step 5: Application Assessment

An Alberta Advantage Immigration Program officer reviews the application to confirm that:

  • All eligibility requirements are met

  • The job offer is valid

  • The candidate is likely to establish economically in Alberta

Additional documents may be requested during the assessment process.

Step 6: Receive a Decision

If the application is approved, the applicant receives a provincial nomination from Alberta.

The candidate can then proceed to apply for permanent residence through the Express Entry system with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

If the application is refused, the applicant will receive a letter explaining the reasons for the decision and may request reconsideration if an assessment error occurred.
