Post-Grad Work Permit

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program in Canada allows international students who have completed a program at a Canadian post-secondary institution to remain in Canada and gain valuable work experience. This experience significantly contributes to a graduate’s ability to qualify for Canadian permanent residence through several immigration pathways

A PGWP is crucial for graduates who want to work in Canada after their studies. It allows them to work for any employer, for any number of hours, and anywhere in Canada. This flexibility helps graduates gain the Canadian work experience required for many of Canada’s permanent residency programs, thereby enhancing their chances of becoming permanent residents. It also helps them in paying their bills or to afford some entertainment activities during their stay in Canada.

To be eligible for a PGWP, you must:

  •    Be 18 years old or older
  •    Have studied full-time in Canada in a program of at least 8 months
  •    Have completed and passed the program and received a notification that you are eligible to obtain your degree, diploma, or certificate
  •    Have studied at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

You must apply for a PGWP within 180 days of receiving confirmation (such as a transcript or an official letter) from your educational institution that you have met the requirements of your program.

Apply online through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website. If you are in Canada, you should have a valid status. If your status has expired, you need to restore it before applying.

You will need the following documents unless asked for something specific:

  • Passport copies
  • Study permit
  • Transcripts
  • Official letter from your school
  • Application fee

Obtaining a PGWP can significantly help you gain permanent residency in Canada but it’s never certain. With Canadian work experience, you can enhance your eligibility for several immigration pathways including:

  •    Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  •    Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
  •    Federal Skilled Trades (FST)
  •    Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)
  •    Quebec Experience Class (for those who studied in Quebec)

Now this is an important question that students have in mind all the time. It is important to know that a post-graduate work permit is not exactly like the working hours you get while studying.  With a PGWP, you can work for any employer in any location across Canada for as many hours as you wish. There is no restriction on the type of employment and no requirement for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
