Study Permit

Disclaimer: As of 2024, Study permits will be allocated based on each province or territory’s population. Canada stands as one of the top countries rich with the best educational institutions beside the culture and landscapes.  The country offers a rich and rewarding experience for international students. This is why most students look for a study permit as soon as they complete their high school or undergrad. Let’s talk about how to obtain a study permit and all the necessary things related to it.

Securing a study permit is a crucial step for anyone aspiring to study in Canada. The process typically involves applying online or through a visa application center (VAC), and providing necessary documents. These are:

  • A letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI)
  • Proof of financial support (or scholarship)
  • Documents to demonstrate that you are a bona-fide student e.g. Study plan, ties to country of residence, etc.
  • A valid passport
  • Biometrics and Medical

Remember a study permit is not something for you to abuse. It’s essential to familiarize oneself with the terms of the permit to ensure compliance and avoid any potential issues. As a student you have to take care of the following things at all times:

  • Maintain full-time enrollment at a DLI
  • Make satisfactory academic progress
  • Comply with any additional conditions outlined by IRCC.
  • Following the Study Permit

Once in Canada, it’s vital to adhere to the conditions of the study permit and any regulations set forth by IRCC. This includes keeping one’s permit valid at all times, informing authorities of any changes in contact information or study program, and refraining from engaging in unauthorized work or overstaying the permit’s duration.

With a study permit in hand, international students gain access to a wealth of resources and opportunities. From academic support services to cultural enrichment programs, universities and colleges across Canada offer a supportive environment conducive to success. Moreover, students have the chance to explore the country’s natural beauty, vibrant cities, and diverse communities, enriching their educational experience beyond the classroom.

Many international students seek part-time employment to supplement their finances and gain valuable work experience. With a study permit, students are eligible to work on or off-campus for up to 20 hours per week during the academic term and full-time during scheduled breaks. This opportunity not only provides financial support but also allows students to enhance their skills, network, and integrate into Canadian society.
