Permanent Resident Travel Document ( PRTD )

A Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) allows Canadian permanent residents without a valid Permanent Resident (PR) card to re-enter Canada. Typically valid for a single entry, the PRTD is essential for permanent residents abroad who need to return to Canada via commercial transportation.

Understanding the Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD)

Permanent residents are expected to carry a valid PR card when traveling outside Canada, as it serves as official proof of their status and is required for re-entry via commercial carriers such as airplanes, trains, buses, or boats. If a permanent resident is outside Canada without a valid PR card, they must obtain a PRTD to return.

Eligibility Criteria for a PRTD

To qualify for a PRTD, applicants must:

  • Be a Permanent Resident: Hold valid permanent resident status in Canada.

  • Be Outside Canada: Currently reside outside Canadian territory.

  • Lack a Valid PR Card: Do not possess a valid PR card or have an expired one.

  • Meet Residency Obligations: Have fulfilled the residency requirement of living in Canada for at least 730 days within the last five years.

Applicants must provide evidence supporting their permanent resident status and residency compliance.

Application Process for a PRTD

  1. Prepare Documentation:

    • Valid passport or travel document.
    • Proof of permanent resident status (e.g., Record of Landing, Confirmation of Permanent Residence).
    • Documents demonstrating compliance with residency obligations (e.g., employment records, lease agreements).
  2. Complete the Application:

    • Fill out the Application for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (IMM 5524) form accurately.
  3. Submit the Application:

    • Apply online through the Permanent Residence Portal.
    • Pay the applicable processing fee.
  4. Await Processing:

    • Processing times vary; it’s advisable to apply well in advance of planned travel.
  5. Receive the PRTD:

    • Upon approval, instructions will be provided on how to obtain the PRTD, typically affixed to the applicant’s passport.

Detailed instructions and forms are available on the official IRCC website.

Important Considerations

  • Single Entry: A PRTD is usually valid for one-time entry into Canada. After returning, apply for a new PR card promptly.

  • Residency Obligation: Failure to meet residency requirements may lead to loss of permanent resident status.

  • Processing Times: Delays can occur; plan accordingly to avoid travel disruptions.
