What is the Global Skills Strategy?

The Global Skills Strategy (GSS) is a program that provides faster visa and work permit processing for highly skilled workers, ensuring that businesses in Canada can access global talent efficiently. It is ideal for employers looking to fill positions in engineering, IT, AI, and other high-demand sectors.

Who Qualifies for the Global Skills Strategy?

There are two key categories under GSS:

  1. High-Skilled Workers Eligible for Two-Week Processing

    • Must be applying from outside Canada.
    • Work must be managerial (TEER 0) or professional (TEER 1) under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system.
    • Employer must submit a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) under the Global Talent Stream (GTS) or be LMIA-exempt under the International Mobility Program (IMP).
  2. Short-Term Work Permit Exemptions

    • Workers in high-skilled occupations (TEER 0 & 1) may be exempt from a work permit for up to 15 days (once every six months) or 30 days (once every 12 months).
    • Researchers working in publicly funded institutions can work without a permit for up to 120 days (once every 12 months).

How to Apply for a Work Permit Under GSS

  1. Employer Submits LMIA (If Required): For those applying through the Global Talent Stream.
  2. Worker Applies for a Work Permit: Submit an application online or through a visa office.
  3. Two-Week Processing: Eligible applications are processed within two weeks.
  4. Receive Work Permit & Start Working in Canada: Approved applicants can enter Canada and begin employment.
