Closed Work Permit

A Closed Work Permit allows foreign workers to work in Canada for a specific employer and location. It requires a job offer, an LMIA (if applicable), and meeting eligibility requirements.

What is a Closed Work Permit?

A Closed Work Permit (also known as an employer-specific work permit) is issued to foreign nationals who have a job offer from a Canadian employer. Unlike an Open Work Permit, this visa restricts the worker to one employer, job role, and work location.

Who Needs a Closed Work Permit?

You need a Closed Work Permit if:
✅ You have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer.
✅ Your employer has obtained a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) (unless exempt).
✅ You meet eligibility criteria such as work experience, education, and language requirements.

How to Apply for a Closed Work Permit

  1. Get a Job Offer: Your employer must provide a valid job contract.
  2. LMIA (If Required): Some jobs require an LMIA to prove no Canadian worker is available for the position.
  3. Submit Application: Apply online or at a visa office, including supporting documents.
  4. Processing & Decision: If approved, you receive a work permit valid for the employer and role specified.

Closed Work Permit vs. Open Work Permit

  • Closed Work Permit: Tied to one employer, location, and job.
  • Open Work Permit: Allows you to work for any employer in Canada (e.g., PGWP, Spousal Work Permit).

Processing Time & Validity

  • Processing time varies from 2 weeks to several months, depending on your country and LMIA status.
  • Most permits are valid for 1-2 years but can be extended if eligibility continues.

Employer-Specific Work Permit Exemptions

Some workers do not need an LMIA, including:

  • Intra-Company Transfers
  • International Trade Agreements (e.g., CUSMA, CETA)
  • Significant Benefit to Canada cases
